The Johnson & Johnson vision is “to be recognised by stakeholders as the premier example of a corporate enterprise that integrates social responsibility into all aspects of its business interests.”
We believe that our Corporate Social Responsibility partnerships are a powerful reflection of our values. Our worldwide partnerships are focused in the areas of: Children’s Health, Access to Care, Advancing Healthcare Knowledge and Community Responsibility.
These initiatives supplement the many local activities supported by our employees and companies in the communities surrounding our offices and manufacturing facilities. Some examples of our UK and European Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives include:
European Health Leadership Programme (EHLP): This programme is a collaborative undertaking between INSEAD, a leading European Business School, and Johnson and Johnson. The EHLP is a two week residency programme designed to provide a select group of healthcare professionals with an educational experience that will equip them to play significant leadership roles in the rapidly changing and challenging healthcare world.
Over the Wall Gang Camp: Formed in 1999, the Over the Wall Gang Camp provides creative and challenging activities to children and young people affected by cancer. The camp also provides much needed respite for carers.
Johnson & Johnson financial support has enabled the Camp to continue to expand its programme and invite more children. A number of JOHNSON & JOHNSON employees also volunteer to help with the camp.
Tommy’s: Johnson & Johnson Consumer has embarked upon a partnership with Tommy’s to inform and educate all parents-to-be about health in pregnancy. By providing this information, both partners hope to ensure that every pregnancy in the UK has the best possible chance of a healthy outcome.
Diabetes Partnership: Johnson & Johnson works in partnership with the Warwick Diabetes Care (WDC) at Warwick University and the Focus Group for Asians with Diabetes (FAD) to deliver the Diabetes Educational Programme. The partnership works on the implementation of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Diabetes to provide more education for people with diabetes and for healthcare professionals.
We acknowledge our position within the wider local community by respecting the natural environment, recycling materials and conserving resources.
Our global approach
Johnson & Johnson companies all over the world partner with a number of organisations as part of our commitment to environmental values and sustainable growth. Our involvement with major conservation organisations includes board membership by some of our senior management.
Environmental initiatives at the ETHICON suture manufacturing plant in Scotland
In addition to global environmental initiatives, local initiatives are implemented at many of our manufacturing sites and offices. For example at our suture manufacturing facility in Scotland, UK, over half the footprint of the site is devoted to our environmental Biodiversity Site project. This project is run in conjunction with a number of local organisations, schools and community groups. Our goal is to manage the land in such a way to create a diverse habitat system for a variety of wildlife.
In 2005, this unique initiative was awarded:
- West Lothian Environmental Award in recognition of the contribution made to effective environmental management
- ‘Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland’ (VIBES) award for demonstrating exceptional environmental performance.
- Johnson & Johnson Worldwide Environmental Excellence Award
In addition to the Biodiversity Site, we have introduced many other environmentally friendly initiatives at our Scotland facility, including:
- Sustainable Urban Drainage System.
- Waste management techniques.
- Use of roof mounted wind turbines and various energy efficient systems within the facility.
- We have reduced energy usage (CO2 Reduction) by 3% since 2006 by implementing energy best practice.
- We have also reduced water usage and all our office paper derived from sustainable sources.
Our suture cartons are manufactured from Virgin material using wood pulp from renewable resources; inks used in our printing process are free from heavy metals and our Ethylene Oxide sterilisation at our Livingston facility is one of the most modern in the world incorporating the use of non CFC sterilising methods and was the first non CFC sterilisation plant in the world.
